| Ryan was tired of lying on his back so we tried to accommodate him wanting to sit up! |
Ryan's issues seem to be from lungs that are not maximizing their potential so he's not getting the oxygen he needs. Remember, the way his heart is rewired, blood enters the heart by being vacuumed in when his lungs expand. Ryan's always has some sort of underlying pulmonary (lung) disease so it's no surprise he's struggling to regain full lung function. One of the issues may be as simple as him having gone on the heart-lung bypass machine. When a person has open-heart surgery they're put on a heart-lung bypass machine which effectively stops the blood flow in the heart so surgeons can do their job. No matter how you slice it, it's hard on the body.
Yesterday it was clear he need more support so they intubated (put him on the ventilator) in the early evening. All day his O2 saturations had been dropping and slowly but surely they stopped coming back up into acceptable ranges. When he was hovering in the 40s and 50s the team decided it was time to give his body rest and help him get rid of the fluid collecting in his lungs.
His vitals are stable. Now it's just a question of how much time he needs for his lungs to rebound.
The silver lining is that he's totally sedated... he's no longer angry, in pain, or will remember any of this. My anxiety level is lower now that he's no longer desatting and I know he's comfortable. I hesitate to show pictures of him on the vent for those not used to it, but I'm posting it anyway for those who want to see his little face.

checking in and continuing to pray for improvement. Patricia from KY
ReplyDeleteAwww poor cupcake. Ryan just needs a little more time to rebound. Good thing is that he is getting plenty of rest and comfort while he is at it perfect time to heal.
ReplyDeleteWe are praying for his lungs to heal faster, for peace and rest. The same peace and rest for you also.
Praying for you & praying for Ryan.

ReplyDeleteKeeping him and you in my prayers. The recovery is just so full of little steps back & forth to balance everything... Ryan is such a fighter, though. Surely God has plans for this child and his story.

ReplyDeleteYou are a good mama! Ryan has come to my mind so many times in the last week and I have prayed for him and for you. Only by God's grace could you have so much strength :) Here's a hug ((())) Love you! Mandy
ReplyDeletePoor guy. But you are right, he looks more comfortable. I pray his lungs rebound and regain strength quickly.
ReplyDeleteWow. Speechless. Words can't express how deeply I was touched by your writing and your "story." I'll continue to lift you all up in prayer. Seems there is so little else I can do. I did forward your meal request on to church, and hopefully that'll be one less item for you to be concerned about next week. Strength and peace to you, special mama. So glad that God has crossed our paths, although only from a distance as of now. Perhaps some day, in person.... Virtual hugs to you. And never forget, "we are more than conquerers through Him who loved us." (Romans 8:37)
ReplyDeleteLeighann, Thanks for updating us all on Ryan's recovery. I'm glad they have him comfortable w/ the dopamine and morphine. Cam and I are praying for your journey at good ol' Children's, Ryan's health, and the bonding of the sweet girls w/ Marmi and Papa (praise our Heavenly Father for sweet grandparents). See you later today and love ya, Tosha
