Gettysburg on Independence Weekend.

On Saturday we headed up to Gettysburg and happened upon a reenactment of the Civil War. Who knew July 1-3, 1863 was the date of the Battle at Gettysburg? We sure didn't. We were lucky enough to help celebrate the 148th anniversary.

As we were driving up Ainsley asked about the Civil War. Natalie immediately started telling her it was a war fought in our country between the North (the blue guys) and the South (the grey guys). That the North didn't want slaves and the South did. (We don't want them either, she said). The North won and then there was segregation in the South.

She really said all that and I was impressed.

The first thing we did was head over to the wedding. For the three days of the reenactment, they held a wedding. On the day we were there a couple who witnessed the reenactment the day before asked to be married the following day. So we witnessed a real wedding. Here is the band playing during the ceremony. They play on instruments made in the 1800s.

And the preacher...

The preacher read from I Corinthians 13 (the famous Love Chapter) during the ceremony. Henry reached over and put his hand on my knee in the sweltering heat.

After the wedding, we walked through Suttler's Row where all the shop and refreshments were set up in tents. We came upon a band that was quite entertaining.

We also took the girls to see a fashion show where they started from the bloomers up and showed everything a woman wore during the 1800s.

Ainsley took that time to make me a drink out of straw.

Natalie was totally engaged and even got up the courage to ask a question at the end.

The battle took place at 5 pm.

We took a quick tour of the sleeping quarters before heading to dinner in town.

We had dinner at Dobbins Inn where we saw two Civil War soldiers from the two different sides drinking together at the outdoor bar.

We finished the night on a good note that tasted of brownie, hot fudge sauce and vanilla ice cream.

It was a hit.
