This week for our Pinterest Party, I'm featuring a project I did on my own (gasp!) instead of seeing online. I know, I know. Crazy me for coming up with something all by myself, but here goes.
It's annoying when one of our kitchen chairs gets a little loose... Last time this happened I ended up eventually throwing out the chair and buying a new set of four. Luckily I found them for $20 at a yard sale. Now that set has one broken chair. Seriously. Why is it always only one?
When a furniture repairman came to work on our living room sofa (which the movers broke) I asked him how much it would cost to have him fix the chair. "It's not worth it," he said. "If I take that back to my shop it'll cost $60 to fix." Sixty bucks?! For a chair I spent FIVE DOLLARS on? Ah-em. "How would I fix it myself? I tried using wood glue but that didn't work at all," I said.
"It's actually really easy," he assured me. "All you have to do is tap the chair apart, apply some 2-ton epoxy - not the five minute drying stuff, the regular stuff - and then put the chair back together. Should hold really nice for you."
Armed with this information, I went to Home Depot for 2-ton epoxy... the slow drying kind. They didn't have 2-ton epoxy, but they had some that holds 3200 pounds. "What's an extra 800 pounds gonna do for me?" I thought and bought it. It cost something like $2.98. Or maybe it was $3.98, I can't remember. The point is, it was pretty inexpensive.
Here it is really apart when I tapped the back piece off the frame.
I applied epoxy in all four holes.
Then tapped the chair back together, anchored it down, and let it dry.
I can't even tell which one in the set was broken. That's how good the trick worked.
Hopefully it will be a long time before I have to replace my new set of chairs.
Okay, your turn. If you did a project this week, link up or comment below. I loved seeing everything you did last week.
I finally joined the Pinterest Party today!! I can't wait to see what is here!! :)
ReplyDeletelove your kitchen chairs. and your floor. and your leather furniture. ;) love that you fixed this chair all by yourself. that's inspiring me to fix a few things around here...hmmm, where to start?
ReplyDeleteI have these antique kitchen chairs that aren't very stable anymore. They're fine for my kids, but I worry every time people come over that they're just going to fall apart. They're glued together, so it looks like I need to tap them apart and re-glue. Oh what a project. I have six chairs to do. But it's cheaper than buying new ones!!! Thanks for the tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteYou always were a resourceful kinda gal!!

ReplyDeleteI love your Mrs. Fix It on chairs, we always use wood glue and it doesn't hold long so we will have to try this.
I so need this idea for some of our dining room chairs! Going to keep this for my next project, when I have some time. And I will join the Pinterest party! Thanks!
