Having a Blast with Breyers

Sometime in the last two years - without realizing it - we formed a tradition of family night. That's what the girls call it, without us prompting them. They know Friday starts the weekend. Daddy typically rolls in a little earlier from work and they're allowed to stay up a little later.

I don't remember where I heard it or when, but sometime pre-offspring I heard parenting advice that recommended having a family night - some sort of routine when your kids could look forward to spending time with you. I kept it in the back of my mind as something important for tweens and teens.I realized a few weeks ago we're already there. The kids get truly disappointed if we don't sit down as a family on Fridays.

Family night may change over the next decade, but for now it usually includes a movie and sometimes a special addition, like a fire and marshmallows in the winter or special treats in the summer. When Breyers asked me to review two of their new flavors - Breyers Blasts! Chocolate REESE'S and Breyers Blasts! OREO Birthday Blast! - I knew this would be a perfect addition to our summer family nights, so I tried it out on them early.

The girls and Henry drove down from Pittsburgh to see Ryan and me for Mother's Day. On Saturday night after a romp at Dupont Circle, we came back to Ryan's room for Family Movie Night. We surprised the kids with Breyers Blasts! When I suggested some of the nurses share with us, Natalie said, "That's very kind of us."She said this sincerely, like she was impressed.

Daddy dished out the flavors while Ryan and Natalie waited patiently.

I'm not sure why Ainsley wanted her armpit involved, but she did. "Smell my armpit, Mom!"
I tasted both kinds. The Chocolate REESE'S is very rich. It has strands of peanut butter and chunks of REESE'S Peanut Butter Cups and REESE'S Peanut Butter running through chocolate. Henry and Natalie chose this as their favorite of the two.

The OREO Birthday Blast!, in honor of OREO's 100th birthday, it tastes like yellow cake batter (um, yeah, had me at that!) with chunks of OREO cookies and rainbow sprinkles running through it. Being that I very effectively lick my cake batter beaters and bowl when I'm baking, I wasn't surprised this was my favorite. Ainsley loved it too. Ryan would've except he felt so yucky that he wasn't eating anything that day.

  1. um, yeah! i'll enter for $100!! i don't like ice cream, but my family LOVES it and kenny's favorite is chocolate PB, so i'm sure we'd get the REESE'S flavor and the menfolk would eat it in one sitting. :)
how was your weekend at the conference last week? i'm waiting for a blog post about it1 ;)

  2. WOW - giveaways!? Awesome!

Ice Cream for family night at our house 1x/week too. We don't have a set night - though it is usually Sat. unless Wayne and I are having a date night.

I think the Reese's flavor would be our fav.

  3. Mmmm...that Oreo cake batter sounds amazing! And I have a four year old little girl who would be all over those sprinkles!

In our family, we have a movie and sleepover night in mommy and daddy's bed about once a month. Right now the little one is too young to participate but it'll be even better when we get all four of us together! My daughter loves movie night because that means we get to eat ice cream in bed! I mean, really...is there anything more exciting in life to a four year old than that??

I know we would all enjoy these Breyers ice creams at our next movie night (next weekend...we'll be watching Madagascar, the original one in preparation for taking her to see the third in the theater!!)

  4. Mmmm....I was on a diet for a year, and have been working to maintain my weight loss for another year, so needless to say, I haven't had much ice cream in quite a while. The Breyer's Blasts look wonderful though. I may have to pick up either the Heath English Toffee or Klondike Krunch flavors next time I'm in the grocery. I think that it's about time for a treat! :)

  5. We had Friday night/Family night when my children were little, too!! They loved the time together! sometimes we played games, watched a movie, or listened to Dad tell scary stories around a backyard campfire! Whatever we did, it always included a sweet treat like ice cream or S'mores. My husband would dearly love the Reese's ice cream!

  6. We have a weekly Family Fun Night in the summer when we take a break from our usual mid-week church activities. Each week one family member gets to choose an activity. It can be anything from a movie out, getting pizza, going to the driving range, taking in a baseball game, etc.

Getting a carton (or two!) of Breyers and watching a baseball game at home would be a perfect choice for Family Fun Night! The hard part would be choosing which flavor. We love ice cream here!

  10. Our family fun night is Fridays as well. We do something fun in the evening and then the boys get to have a sleep over in one of their rooms. I had not seen the Oreo birthday blast flavor, but my boys love the regular Oreo flavor so I am sure that would be a favorite in our house as well.

Love ice cream too! I’d enjoy Breyers with milk. It’s my favorite way because the milk kind of hardens the outside of the ice cream into a shell. I think I’d have to go for both of those flavors too. They sound great!

  144. Ice cream isn't a regular around here but once in a while my kids crave it. I like Reeses but my kids would probably want the birthday cake flavor.

  149. After reading your description of the Chocolate REESE'S one I can't wait to try it. I especially loved the way you wrote "strands of peanut butter and chunks of REESE'S Peanut Butter Cups....running through chocolate". I can almost taste it. I look forward to buying some soon.
